A courtyard in the Old City, laundry drying slowly on a winter afternoon. We all wear clothes that are so similar, T-shirts, plaid shirts, running pants, jeans, so much the same. Would that we could lay down our differences and joy in this brother and sisterhood. Years ago, an Italian photographer took pictures of the clothes of fallen soldiers during the conflict in Yugoslavia. It was a stark reminder of how much we are alike, seeing the faded Levi jeans, the Nike tennis shoes, the Michael Jordan jersey, and the denim jackets. Were they the clothes of a friend or enemy? Here, the clothes flutter in the February wind, like flags, quiet declarations of the humanity they represent, carefully washed, ready to be worn again. Will they be worn on a day of peace?
