Instead of a stable, a garage, in place of a donkey, a battered old car, mechanics replace the shepherds - this is a nativity for today.

Saviour and Lord
These images began as 12' wall hangings commissioned by Trinity Christian Centre, a local church with a full schedule of outreach and evangelistic meetings. The pictures seem to speak all by themselves, and in a language that crosses conventional language barriers, leading several non English speakers to powerful conversion experiences. The two smaller versions you see here below were a further development and refinement of the original concept, getting closer to what I tried to achieve in the larger paintings. It was always the hope of both parties that commissioned these originals that they be available to a wider audience, these Giclee prints fulfill that need.

As a 'people painter' this was an unusual commission for me - a huge landscape with animals and only the suggestion of figures as a part of the whole I hugely enjoyed the freedom I had in painting this. Although any representation of this subject can only hope to be a kind of giant children's book illustration, I hoped to walk the fine line between a painting that could stand on it's own merit and an image that could have tipped over into kitsch.

I hope I struck the right balance - it's certainly been popular with all those who have seen the original. I'm currently working on an even larger west coast landscape for another client that grew out of this experience - there's a real joy in the challenge of these large works and I'm keen to do a lot more...
