Call
What
is "the call"? Some people wonder if God calls them to be missionaries
or pastors. One thing is for sure: God calls us to follow Jesus Christ.
Jesus once compared the kingdom of heaven to a man who invited many guests
to a great banquet. Some of the guests ignored the invitation; they had
more important things to do. No matter what family you come from or what
occupation you hold, God calls you to know, love and follow his Son. It's
an invitation you don't want to refuse.
We
also call on God when we don't have the answers, when we're hurting or
when we're scared. It's good to acknowledge our weakness and our dependence
on him. When we confess that our own strength is insufficient, God gives
us his strength and wisdom. God promises to answer us when we call on
him.
The
Bible contains many examples of people who called on God.
Genesis 12:8
Psalm 18:6; 31:22; 145:18
In the Old Testament, God called out to the Israelites many times,
but they didn't respond with obedience.
Isaiah 66:4
Jeremiah 35:17
Hosea 11:2
We were called by God to follow Christ.
Romans 1:1,6-7; 8:28-30
Philippians 3:12-14
2 Thessalonians 2:13-14
