Crowns
Fabulously decorated and unbearably heavy, crowns have historically distinguished
the ruling class from the lowly peons. In the past, crowns were much-coveted
symbols of authority, power and riches. True ruling authority, however,
belongs to Jesus Christ. While he was on earth, people rejected Jesus;
they mocked his claims of kingship by forcing him to wear a crown of thorns,
and then they killed him. But the Lord wasn't deterred by this rejection.
Not only did he rise from the dead, he also will one day return to earth
and take his proper position as ruler. And he'll be wearing a golden crown.
Jesus won't be the only one with a crown. Each Christian
will receive a crown of life as part of the heavenly reward for faithfully
following the Lord. In fact, we're told several times to strive toward
the crown; we are to live active Christians lives, persevering even when
bad things happen.
Christ's authority was mocked when he was on
earth, and he was forced to wear a crown made of thorns. When he returns
to rule earth, he will wear the crown of a true ruler.
