Elijah
The prophet Elijah prophesied in the ninth century B.C. to the northern kingdom of Israel. He was a bold man who occasionally complained to God about his solitary calling. Some of his primary opponents were King Ahab and Ahab's wife, Jezebel. They hated Elijah because he denounced their worship of the fertility god Baal. The people did not listen to Elijah, but God proved himself capable of defending his own honor in a showdown with the prophets of Baal.

Elijah had difficult times, but God repeatedly delivered him. Elijah has the distinction of being one of the only two people mentioned in thee Bible who were taken up to heaven without experiencing death. Whole we can admire Elijah's devotion to God in the face of overwhelming odds, as well as the miracles of God did through him, it is important to remember that it was God who empowered Elijah. The writer of the New Testament book of James reminds us that Elijah was merely a man and that the same Spirit of God who enabled Elijah to work miracles and stand against opposition lives in us too.

God performs miracles through Elijah to demonstrate his own power and authority and to meet the need of the moment. Through Elijah, God pronounces judgment on those who do not honor him.
