Refuge
What
would you think if you saw a group of people running for shelter on a
quiet, peaceful, sunny day? You would think they were crazy-or that they
knew something you didn't. People don't run for shelter without cause.
There must be something threatening them.
We
know that God has promised to be our refuge. He hasn't promised a trouble-free
life. If that were the case, we wouldn't need a shelter. But God gives
us peace (see Peace) and the assurance of his love and presence in our
lives even during difficult circumstances. The protection God offers is
protection for our souls (see Soul).
We
can take refuge in God during difficult times.

The Israelites continually turn to idols, sorcery and foreign nations
for help. But these sources of refuge always fail them. Other religions,
witchcraft, wealth, political or military might our own strength are all
unreliable sources of comfort or refuge. Only trusting in God's presence
provides a true and reliable refuge on life's journey.
