Satan
Have you ever thought of God as an accuser standing over you to condemn you for your sins (see Sins)? Actually, the Bible tells us that the exact opposite is true. Jesus Christ is our defense attorney, and Satan is our accuser!

Satan is called the "evil one" because throughout history, he has tried to thwart God's purposes by deceiving and tempting people and by trying to destroy them. But Jesus Christ won the victory over Satan when he died and came to life again. Satan still holds power (see Power) over unbelievers as the ruler of the kingdom of the air, but Christians no longer belong to his kingdom and have nothing to fear from him. If we ever fall under his attack, all we have to do is call on Jesus Christ, and he will deliver us. Satan has no power in God's presence.

Masquerading as a serpent, Satan tempts Eve to disobey God. When Adam and Eve (see Adam and Eve) eat the forbidden fruit, God punishes the serpent and promises to one day defeat Satan through the coming Savior.
Genesis 3:1-15
Satan obtains permission to test Job's devotion to God (see Job).
Job 1:6-12; 2:1-7
Jesus Christ defeated Satan through his death and resurrection. One day Jesus will stop Satan completely by banishing him to eternal punishment in the lake of fire.
