Shield
You wouldn't want to be caught in battle without protection - a person
can dodge only so many arrows and bullets! As in any battle, our spiritual
shields are effective in our spiritual war against Satan's attacks. Our
"shield of faith" represents our unwavering confidence in God,
which we effectively use to defend ourselves from Satan's blows. For example,
Satan may try to make us fearful about life, but we believe that because
of our relationship with God, he will guide and protect us in any situation.
A lively faith in God protects us from Satan's arrow of fear.
King
David was a warrior who knew about the protection and saving strength
of a shield. He wrote a metaphor to describe the kind of trust he had
in God: "But you are a shield around me, O LORD" (Psalm 3:3).
Like
David, we know that the Lord is our defender and refuge. Trials and temptations
come into our lives, and we must contend with them as though we were in
battle. But God is greater than all of our troubles, and he is also greater
than the enemy's schemes to destroy us. Not one arrow can pierce through
God's hedge of protection. The almighty God is our shield; he has the
undeniable victory.
We
are to use the shield of faith to defeat Satan's attacks.
Ephesians 6:16
God is compared to a shield because he is our salvation and protection.
