Tongue
Our
tongues can spread deadly poison or bring healing and strength. Hurtful
words can lead to gossip (see Gossip), which can tear down someone's reputation.
But one word can also calm an enraged person. We are warned to control
our tongues because of the incredible power they wield. Destroying other
people, especially those within the church, goes against the love God
tells us to show other.
Tongue
can refer to either a language or the people the language represents.
God mixed up the languages of the ancient people when they planned to
use their common language to unite in rebellion against him at Babel.
On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave Christians the ability to
speak other languages, allowing everyone that day to hear about God in
their own tongue. In eternity, people from every language group will worship
at God's throne.
Whether
or not you speak another language, strive to "tame your tongue"
and train yourself to teach and encourage others, rather than drag them
down.
The
Bible describes the tongue-the use of words-as a powerful force that directs
our lives. The tongue can give life or bring death.
Proverbs 12:17-19; 21:23
James 1:226; 3:5-9
On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit (see Holy Spirit) gives Christians
a supernatural ability to speak other languages. God gives special instructions
for the use of this spiritual gift.

1 Corinthians 12:10; 12:28--13:31; 14:1-28
Tongues can rebel against God, but they are best used for praising
him. One day all tongues will give glory to Jesus Christ.
