Father As children of God, we can expect to be disciplined if we err. And we shouldn't be discouraged when this happens because discipline shows that God loves us. Just as good parents teach their children not to do things that will hurt them, so our Father in heaven teaches us what is best for us. |

Believe Merely "believing" in God does not make someone a Christian any more than believing in exercise keeps one in shape; a person must actually exercise to stay in shape. Demons "believe" in God (James 2:19). They know he exists, but they don't choose to follow him. Believing that Jesus Christ is your Savior means believing that Jesus' death pays the penalty for your sin. As a result of this belief you repent-you turn away from your sin-and obey Jesus Christ. |

Jews Jews are the physical descendants of Abraham through his grandson Jacob, the father of the Israelites. The label "Jew" came into use after the Babylonian captivity. The stories of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther highlight God's protection of the people in the midst of great danger and opposition. |

Write The Bible's is God's love letter to us. He wrote it for everyone. God himself wrote the Ten Commandments on two stone tablets. More importantly, God's plan and desire was to write his law with permanent marker in the minds and hearts of his people. And that is what he does when he gives the Holy Spirit to those who believe in Jesus. |

Remain When Andrew (see Andrew) and a friend first met Jesus Christ, they stayed with him for a day. Later Jesus chose Andrew and eleven others as his disciples, and they spent three years together. Before Jesus went to the cross, he commanded his disciples to remain in him always. Just as they were constantly with him as he traveled throughout Judea, they were to live their lives centered in Christ. Jesus explained this using the picture of a vine and its branches. Like branches, we must be completely connected to the vine, Jesus, for our source of life. When we don't remain in him, we wither, and our lives cannot produce any fruit. |

Disciples In the Bible, the word "disciple" can apply to followers of John the Baptist, students of the Pharisees or the broader circle of people who believed Jesus' teachings. But it most often refers to the twelve disciples whom Jesus asked to follow him. They lived with him night and day and learned from his teaching and lifestyle. The Bible makes it clear that Jesus' followers were not perfect, but they knew enough to recognize that leaving everything they had in order to follow Jesus was worth the price. |
Holy
Spirit Before Jesus came to the earth, the Holy Spirit guided and directed select people at specific times for specific purposes. To prophets, he revealed future events and warnings of judgment. To kings, he gave wisdom to rule. But when Jesus was near the end of his life on earth, preparing his disciples for his impending death and resurrection, he promised that the Holy Spirit would, form that time on, be with his followers all the time. |
Time God has a clear understanding of time. In the Bible, he warned that all people should live for him because the time is coming when he will return to the earth. While some believe they can delay serving God, we are commanded to serve God now. We are to take advantage of the moments God gives us to share the gospel. |

Peter Simon Peter was an amazing man of God. One minute we admire him, and the next minute we cringe because he's stuck his foot in his mouth again. One minute our hearts cry out to be like him, and the next minute we're relieved that we're not like him. Peter seemed to operate in extremes, yet God wa preparing him for something very special. |

Grumble Ultimately, our complaints are directed at God, who orders all the events in our lives. Grumbling stems from lack of contentment with what God has given us and failure to believe God is working for our good, especially when circumstances bring us hardship. |
Forever Unlike the boss who retires or the president whose term is complete, nothing will force God out of power. In fact, the Bible tells us that God will always rule, and whatever he establishes cannot be altered by anyone. When everything else seems to change so quickly, God will always be the same. |

Lord We read in the Ten Commandments not to misuse God's name. Traditionally Christians have obeyed this command by not using any of God's names as curse words. Yet, there is a deeper meaning: As the Lord has commanded us to follow him, we live our lives representing his good name. When we sin, even if it is insisting upon our will over God's, we discredit the Lord's name. |

57. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Our forefathers ate (manna) and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59. He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. Many disciples desert Jesus 60.
On hearing it, many of his disciples
said, “This is a hard teaching.
Who can accept it?” |

| God's
schedule, not ours
Gail was leading her drama students through rehearsals for their big play, now only a week away. Then the call came: "Can you fly home, Gail? Dad's had a serious heart attack." Mom needed her, but so did her students. What should I do, Lord? The word "go" flashed through her mind, and she knew it was the right thing to do. Only later did she discover God's purpose. Gail's father, who had scorned her faith in Jesus for so long, asked her to pray for him. "Dad, Jesus wants to give you a new heart." As tears flowed, Gail's father asked Jesus to forgive him and to give him a heart of love like Gail's. Our challenge is to stay in tune with God so that we work according to his schedule. Inevitable God's purposes will sometimes conflict with our preferences. Jesus didn't let others pressure him into a timetable that would take him outside of God's will - and neither should we. We benefit by making a point to seek God's timing. He wants only the best for us. Have you faced a situation where your schedule conflicted with God's timing? What did you learn from it? FURTHER
