Jesus Jesus was born approximately 5 B.C. in the town of Bethlehem, Israel, to a virgin named Mary, who was descended from King David. Raised in Nazareth by Mary and her husband, Joseph, Jesus lived the ordinary life of a carpenter's son. Those who knew him didn't yet know that he was also God's Son. At age 30, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and tempted by the devil into the desert. He then began healing, teaching and performing miracles throughout Judea. He called people to believe in him as the only way to God. Jesus personally chose 12 men to live, work and minister with him, but many others, including women, believed in, and even traveled with, him. He engaged people at every level of society - and usually was welcomed most by the poor, the sinful and the outcasts. The Jewish religious leaders, who eventually arrested Jesus when Judas betrayed him, rejected Jesus. They used false witnesses, rigged a trial and put political pressure on Pilate to condemn Jesus to death. Hung on a Roman cross to die, Jesus paid the penalty for the sins of all humankind. Buried in a borrowed tomb, he rose on Sunday morning as proof that his mission to conquer sin and death had been accomplished. Jesus appeared to his disciples and then returned to heaven 40 days later with the promise that he would return again someday. |

Temple The temple Solomon built for God was permanent and incredibly beautiful. Sadly, wicked kings later filled the temple with idols. God's glory left that place, and it was finally destroyed by the Babylonians. The Jews rebuild a less spectacular version of the temple after they returned from the Babylonian captivity. In the New Testament period, Jews worshiped in the temple rebuilt by King Herod. The Romans destroyed it in A.D. 70, just as Jesus predicted. After Jesus' death and resurrection, god no longer dwelt in a building made by human hands, but in the believing human heart. Because the Holy Spirit lives in each believer our very own bodies are his temples. Today a church building is not the temple, but it is where many "temples" of the Holy Spirit gather to worship God weekly. |
Truth Humans, on the other hand, tend to try to cover up their blemishes, present themselves in the best light or skew the truth to reveal only the details that make their case. But nothing we do can change the truth. When we try to cover it up, we are imprisoned by our lies, But because we know God's forgiveness is available, we can dare to confess our sins and admit that we do not measure up to God's standards of perfection. Only then are we truly free to let ourselves be known- because our sins, ugly as they may be, are forgiven. Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free". |
Time God has a clear understanding of time. In the Bible, he warned that all people should live for him because the time is coming when he will return to the earth. While some believe they can delay serving God, we are commanded to serve God now. We are to take advantage of the moments God gives us to share the gospel. |
Faith Faith is essential to eternal life; it is the way we have a relationship with God. First, when we receive Jesus Christ as Savior, we are exercising faith that he is the way to heaven, the one who makes us God's child. Second, because we cannot see God now, we live our lives by faith. We make our decisions and follow desires based on God's character and his promises. |
Signs The Bible also gives us signs to help us understand what is happening in the world around us. The first believers saw many signs to confirm the truth of the message about Christ. Most of all, signs help explain how we can come into a relation with the true and living God. God expects us to pay attention to, and follow, his signs. |

Pharisees The Pharisees were the most influential Jewish leaders while Jesus was on earth. They tried to perfectly uphold the law, and they imposed that expectation on others. Yet as carefully as they defined the law, they went one step too far and made it the epicenter of their faith. Jesus was not impressed with their law - abiding ways; in fact he harshly criticized them for burdening people with unnecessary rules and forgetting how to love others. |
Priest The two most important Biblical teachings on the subject of priesthood relate to all Christians. First, there is now only one high priest: jesus Christ. Under the Old Covenant, the priest with the highest God-given authority could enter the holiest part of the temple in order to make sacrifices on behalf of all the Israelites. When Jesus sacrificed himself for humanity's sins, he became our eternal high priest. Jesus is the only go-between for us with God. Second, all believers in Jesus Christ are priests who bring their worship to the very throne room of the holy one. |
Jews Jews are the physical descendants of Abraham through his grandson Jacob, the father of the Israelites. The label "Jew" came into use after the Babylonian captivity. The stories of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther highlight God's protection of the people in the midst of great danger and opposition. |

Believe Merely "believing" in God does not make someone a Christian any more than believing in exercise keeps one in shape; a person must actually exercise to stay in shape. Demons "believe" in God (James 2:19). They know he exists, but they don't choose to follow him. Believing that Jesus Christ is your Savior means believing that Jesus' death pays the penalty for your sin. As a result of this belief you repent-you turn away from your sin-and obey Jesus Christ. |

Holy
Spirit Before Jesus came to the earth, the Holy Spirit guided and directed select people at specific times for specific purposes. To prophets, he revealed future events and warnings of judgment. To kings, he gave wisdom to rule. But when Jesus was near the end of his life on earth, preparing his disciples for his impending death and resurrection, he promised that the Holy Spirit would, form that time on, be with his followers all the time. |

Rule Jesus Christ, as God's Son, has the ultimate right (see Right) to rule. As Christians, we allow Jesus, not the power of sin, to govern our lives. Heaven is fully aware of his rule, even if the peoples of the earth are not. |
Curse |
Nicodemus How did Nicodemus respond? We don't know. But we do know that Nicodemus was on the scene to help with Jesus' burial when all his other followers were in hiding. The Bible says he supplied 75 pounds of burial spices - enough for a royal funeral! |
Condemn Before we trusted Jesus Christ as Savior, we were condemned. Our sin promised death - eternal separation from God. But then God pardoned us. Almost daily, we have the option of condemning or forgiving people. Jesus Christ urges us to love each other and to let our righteous God do the judging. |
Home With this in mind, the image of a home or house is often used symbolically. The temple was called the house of God. Although God is present everywhere, the temple represented his special relationship with the Israelites, his chosen people, and their identification with him. In the new testament, Christians are referred to as God's house because his Spirit lives in them, as the Spirit of God filled the temple (see Temple). |

Write The Bible's is God's love letter to us. He wrote it for everyone. God himself wrote the Ten Commandments on two stone tablets. More importantly, God's plan and desire was to write his law with permanent marker in the minds and hearts of his people. And that is what he does when he gives the Holy Spirit to those who believe in Jesus. |

Then Jesus,
still teaching
in the temple
court, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.
I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true.
You do not know him. 29. But I know him because
I am from him and he sent me.” Unbelief of the Jewish leaders 45.
Finally the temple
guards went back to the chief priests
and Pharisees,
who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” |
47.
“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees
retorted.48.
“Has any of the rulers
or of the Pharisees
believed
in him? 49. No! But this mob that knows nothing
of the law – there is a curse
on them.” CHAPTER EIGHT
1.
But Jesus
went to the Mount
of Olives. 2. At dawn he appeared again in the temple
court, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach
them. 3. The teachers
of the law and the Pharisees
brought in a woman
caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and 4.
Said to Jesus,
“Teacher,
this woman
was caught in the act of adultery. 5. In the Law
Moses commanded us to stone
such women.
Now what do you say?” 6. They were using this
question as a trap,
in order to have a basis for accusing him. |
