Father As children of God, we can expect to be disciplined if we err. And we shouldn't be discouraged when this happens because discipline shows that God loves us. Just as good parents teach their children not to do things that will hurt them, so our Father in heaven teaches us what is best for us. |

Peter Simon Peter was an amazing man of God. One minute we admire him, and the next minute we cringe because he's stuck his foot in his mouth again. One minute our hearts cry out to be like him, and the next minute we're relieved that we're not like him. Peter seemed to operate in extremes, yet God wa preparing him for something very special. |

Believe Merely "believing" in God does not make someone a Christian any more than believing in exercise keeps one in shape; a person must actually exercise to stay in shape. Demons "believe" in God (James 2:19). They know he exists, but they don't choose to follow him. Believing that Jesus Christ is your Savior means believing that Jesus' death pays the penalty for your sin. As a result of this belief you repent-you turn away from your sin-and obey Jesus Christ. |
Blessing In the Old Testament, God promised to bless Abraham and make Abraham and his descendants a blessing to all people. God intended for the Israelites to bless all people by revealing God and his nature to the surrounding nations. The Israelites, however failed to fulfill that role. They disobeyed God and received punishment instead. |

Children When we believe in Jesus Christ, we become children of God. He disciplines us as children because he loves us as his children (see Hebrews 12:7-11). Children of God will go to live with him when they die or when Christ comes again. |

Disciples In the Bible, the word "disciple" can apply to followers of John the Baptist, students of the Pharisees or the broader circle of people who believed Jesus' teachings. But it most often refers to the twelve disciples whom Jesus asked to follow him. They lived with him night and day and learned from his teaching and lifestyle. The Bible makes it clear that Jesus' followers were not perfect, but they knew enough to recognize that leaving everything they had in order to follow Jesus was worth the price. |

| Fulfill Does it surprise you that the Bible almost never uses the word "fulfillment" in reference to a human's satisfaction in life? The Bible doesn't promise a fulfilling life. In the Bible, the word "fulfill" refers overwhelmingly to God's following through on his promises and intentions. God will always keep his promises. The plans he makes will come about. Our faithful God in control of all that happens in the universe, and his plans will overcome any obstacle. |

Home With this in mind, the image of a home or house is often used symbolically. The temple was called the house of God. Although God is present everywhere, the temple represented his special relationship with the Israelites, his chosen people, and their identification with him. In the new testament, Christians are referred to as God's house because his Spirit lives in them, as the Spirit of God filled the temple (see Temple). |
Jews Jews are the physical descendants of Abraham through his grandson Jacob, the father of the Israelites. The label "Jew" came into use after the Babylonian captivity. The stories of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther highlight God's protection of the people in the midst of great danger and opposition. |
Life This is where Jesus enters the picture. He came to give us abundant life. He tells us to give him our cares and stop worrying because worrying doesn't add a single hour to our lives. Jesus also tells us to stop selfishly hoarding our lives; instead, we are to freely give them away by serving him. In a strange paradox, it's only when we lose our lives to him that we gain them back. Jesus reminds us that if we get everything the world has to offer, yet lose our souls, we haven't really lived. |
Lord We read in the Ten Commandments not to misuse God's name. Traditionally Christians have obeyed this command by not using any of God's names as curse words. Yet, there is a deeper meaning: As the Lord has commanded us to follow him, we live our lives representing his good name. When we sin, even if it is insisting upon our will over God's, we discredit the Lord's name. |

| Message One of the bigger communication revolutions of the late twentieth century was the advent of e-mail, instant messages allowing us to contact people without gargantuan phone bills. But even more revolutionary than the technological revolution is the fact that God communicates with us. |
Money Jesus talked more than once about the difficulty of rich people getting into heaven. Yet the question isn't, "What do you own," but rather, "What owns you?" God tells us to give some of our money to the church for his use. But everything we own - houses, cars, coats - should be for God's use. God asks us to give up anything that we view as more important than him. And what we do have should be recognized as a gift from him. We can enjoy those blessings, but be ready to use them for service. |

Holy Spirit Before Jesus came to the earth, the Holy Spirit guided and directed select people at specific times for specific purposes. To prophets, he revealed future events and warnings of judgment. To kings, he gave wisdom to rule. But when Jesus was near the end of his life on earth, preparing his disciples for his impending death and resurrection, he promised that the Holy Spirit would, form that time on, be with his followers all the time. |

Time God has a clear understanding of time. In the Bible, he warned that all people should live for him because the time is coming when he will return to the earth. While some believe they can delay serving God, we are commanded to serve God now. We are to take advantage of the moments God gives us to share the gospel. |
| Trust The person who say, "Trust me!" is the very person we suspect we shouldn't trust, right? No wonder it's hard to trust God when we've been burned so many times by people. Yet, God alone is completely trustworthy. Anything else in which we trust will fall: people, position, money, ourselves. The Israelites repeatedly turned to other nations for support, even though God had told them to trust in him rather than military might. He wanted his people to know that he-nothing or no one else-had delivered them from their enemies. |

| Whole God is not half-hearted, and he doesn't do things halfway. What he promises, gives or makes, he does completely. Through the death of Christ, every last sin-past, present and future-has been paid for, and those who receive Christ as Savior are free from sin's power. Through the resurrection of Christ, all of humanity has been given the opportunity to accept the freely given gift of grace and eternal life. From a high mountaintop, Satan offered all of the kingdoms of the world to Jesus if only Jesus would bow down before him. The offering of the whole earth was not enough to distract the Lord from his mission. |
Witness |
Satan Satan is called the "evil one" because throughout history, he has tried to thwart God's purposes by deceiving and tempting people and by trying to destroy them. But Jesus Christ won the victory over Satan when he died and came to life again. Satan still holds power (see Power) over unbelievers as the ruler of the kingdom of the air, but Christians no longer belong to his kingdom and have nothing to fear from him. If we ever fall under his attack, all we have to do is call on Jesus Christ, and he will deliver us. Satan has no power in God's presence. |
Example In the same way, Christians should live in such a way as to be good examples to other Christians. If a person can follow that person's example. |
Head |
New When it comes to our own lives, we can't just brand ourselves "New and improved" and then sit back and watch the results. Only Jesus Christ can make us new and renew our being. When Jesus died for our sins, he fulfilled the old covenant (or promise) of sacrifice and gave us a new covenant of grace. When we believe in Jesus, the ugly and dirty things of our old lives are stripped away and we become new creations of God. |

Night There are many great
stories in the Bible that occurred during the night: During the night
of Passover, the Lord struck down every firstborn son of the Egyptians.
The Israelites followed a pillar of fire when they traveled by night
during the exodus. Under cover of night, Gideon and an army of Midianites.
Torches lit the night when Jesus was betrayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. |

So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a
towel around his waist. 5. After that, he poured

drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. Jesus Predicts His Betrayal 18.
“I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen.
But this is to fulfill
the scripture:
‘He who shares my bread
has lifted up his heel against me’. |
25.

is glorified
in him, then God
will glorify

1. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2. There are many rooms in my Father’s house; otherwise, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. |
