7. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name – the name you gave me – so that they may be one as we are one. 12. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the child of hell so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

13. “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

 The Spirit of truth

"I just don't believe God loves me. Why should I?" The young woman's piercing question didn't ruffle her counselor.

"Because that is what the Bible says, it's what the Holy Spirit says, it's what Jesus showed us and, if you care to look, it's what all of creation tells us," she replied. "Now tell me why you shouldn't believe."

The young woman thought a moment and said, "I don't know. I just don't feel that he loves me."

The truth is the truth regardless of what we feel or believe about it. When we don't embrace the truth, or when we allow lies about God to take root in our hearts, we suffer from the insecurity and unbelief that result. The honest seeker will find the truth because Jesus has promised that the Holy Spirit will reveal the truth to us.

We need the Holy Spirit and his ministry, not because of a lack of truth and revelation about God, but because the Holy Spirit exposes the carefully disguised lies that keep us from walking in the light.

What do you believe about God's character? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what is or isn't true.

 The issue of pain

Pain and trouble drive us to consider some of the deepest question of life - questions like: Why me? Does God care? Is there hope for deliverance?

The answers are not always clear, but it helps to remember that God is not the author of suffering. On the contrary, everything he does is good (see Genesis 1:31, p.24). Suffering is often the result of our own - and others' - sinful, selfish choices.

God loves us, and he grieves when pain touches our lives. God created us to love and be loved. To truly love, we must be free to choose not to love, we must be free to choose not to love. If God intervened every time we chose not to love, we   would not be truly free. He will not violate our freedom, or the freedom of another, to protect us.

Of course, God is not powerless. He sent Jesus to enter our world and break the cycle of sin and death. Forgiveness is available for those who sin. Sustaining power is available for those who suffer. God is able to turn all problems, even those brought on by evil choices, to work toward the accomplishment of his purposes.

Reflect on how God has brought good out of difficult situations in your life.
