Project Hope is a grassroots, non-denominational mission located in Jaipur, Rajasthan (India), that is serving in one of the most impoverished areas of the world today - in the slums of Garidharipura, the rag picker compounds in Gandhi Path, the tent villages of the nomadic Banjara people, and in other desperately poor neighborhoods. Here, beneath crowded overpasses, on landfills, vacant lots, and crowded slums, is where the absolute poor live; designated "absolute poor" by the World Health Organization, as many subsist on less than a dollar, and some on as little as 10 cents, a day. There is no running water, and sanitation facilities are inadequate or absent entirely. Open sewers run through narrow dirt streets, slow moving rivers overflowing with bacteria. Cholera, malaria, and chronic diarrhea are common. Most of the disposal is done by pigs, dogs, goats, and cows, who find their food among the garbage, or by ragpickers who earn their living scavenging, sorting, then selling refuse to recyclers. Families of five to seven persons, sometimes more, live in crowded one and two room dwellings made from clay, cow dung, concrete, tin, re-purposed billboards and tarps. Into this "outside caste" and untouchable world Rakesh and Sonali Joseph, along with their team of volunteers, teachers, and medical providers, can be found, living daily their response to the question and edict found in the first epistle of John (3:16-18):

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. So we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If we are blessed with material possessions and see a brother or sister in need, but feel no pity on them, how can the love of God be in us? Let us not love with words or speech, but with actions that are true (from the heart)."
